Well, there’s no denying that summer is back again. The warm weather here in Temple makes that pretty clear! That being said, you’re likely ready for your seasonal break from work or school. Still, don’t let your eagerness make you forget about your smile. Healthy teeth and gums improve the summertime experience. Luckily, your local dental practice can help out. Try following these four oral health tips for your summer vacation.

Attend a Pre-Trip Dental Appointment

Even if your pre-trip schedule seems full, make space for a visit to your dentist. A quick checkup before your travels has various perks.

For one thing, it’ll help prevent a dental emergency on your vacation. After all, the appointment lets your dentist treat small issues – say, cavities – before they worsen. You’d then be less likely to suffer a severe oral condition abroad.

There’s also the fact that a summer appointment is convenient. With less work or school activities to worry about, you’d find it easy to fit the visit into your schedule.

Pack Your Dental Essentials

Perhaps you’ve already done some packing for the upcoming trip. If so, include a dental travel kit in the mix. It’ll ensure your mouth stays clean while you’re away from home. In particular, make sure it contains the following:

  • Travel Toothpaste: Bring some non-abrasive, fluoridated toothpaste. This item will strengthen your enamel and remove harmful plaque.
  • Travel Toothbrush: A soft-bristled travel toothbrush is another essential. If necessary, pack extras to have replacements handy.
  • Travel Floss: Dental floss – whether the typical string or as flossers – reduces your risk for cavities and gum disease.

Keep Up with Oral Hygiene

A dental travel kit won’t be helpful if you don’t use it. So, maintain good oral hygiene during the summer trip.

In general, follow the dental routines you should already practice at home. Namely, brush your teeth twice daily and floss them at least once daily. Also, rinse your mouth with fluoridated mouthwash after meals.

Be Mindful of Vacation Eating

When you travel for vacation, you may want to explore local foods. That’s just fine – doing so is part of a trip’s fun!

Even so, however, be mindful of your meals. Products with excess sugar could cause cavities, while those with hard textures might chip a tooth. As such, pick your items carefully and chew slowly.

As you can see, oral health tips for summer vacation aren’t a drag. Ones like those above will only enhance the fun and excitement.
