Sleep Apnea Therapy in Temple

Are you tired, stressed out, and moody because of interrupted sleep? Sleep apnea or OSA is a condition in which breathing stops for periods of 10 seconds or longer causing excessive daytime tiredness. Oral sleep appliances are now recommended over a CPAP for the treatment of mild and moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?

Obstructive sleep apnea is an involuntary cessation of breathing that is caused by a blockage of the airway and occurs while you are asleep. This serious condition affects between 18 and 30 million adults over 18 in the US; approximately 90% of them go undiagnosed. Sleep apnea can affect your overall health and quality of life and when left untreated, has been linked to hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, work and driving related accidents.

Factors of Sleep Apnea

Many factors may contribute to airway blockage, from the size of airway structures, to swelling of passageways or position of the tongue. Disrupted deep sleep can affect mood, health, and cause excessive daytime tiredness. The added stress and fatigue can cause lack of concentration, loss of memory and accidents in the workplace or while driving. Other health risks include high blood pressure and heart problems, and even a risk of premature death. The sleep apnea patient’s snores can disturb a sleeping partner’s rest, too. Snoring can have a major impact on your life and health.

Non-Surgical Sleep Apnea Therapies

A few tests can determine whether you suffer from OSA and non-surgical therapies may alleviate the problem. A nasal mask (CPAP) can deliver air to keep nasal passages open during sleep. An alternative for mild and moderate cases, patients may now wear dental appliances that reposition the tongue and lower jawbone.

If your sleeping partner says you snore or stop breathing while asleep or if you experience daytime tiredness, contact Dr. Fossum’s office for a consultation. A sleep apnea device may improve your quality of life. It’s just another way we can help you smile.
